Red River Valley Museum

The Red River Valley Museum is the place for art, science, culture, and history in North Central Texas. We have three main galleries as well as a traveling art room used to host special events including our annual international juried art competition.bThe museum foyer includes an introductory video as well as exhibits on famed musicians Roy Orbison and Jack Teagarden who have their roots in Vernon.

The newly redesigned Berry Gallery tells the history of our area through brand new, eye-catching exhibits showcasing the J. Henry and Ethel Ray Collection. This collection of fossils and artifacts helps tell the history of our area from millions of years ago through the arrival of the first Native Americans and later the first European settlers.

The Bond Gallery is home to over 135 game mounts representing the vast collection of big game hunter Bill Bond. Bond hunted all over the world from the frozen tundra of the Arctic Circle to the plains of Africa.

The Waggoner Gallery contains the history of the famed Waggoner Ranch, the largest in the United States under one fence. Visitors will also see the artwork of famed sculptress Electra Waggoner Biggs in a replica of her ranch studio.

Wilbarger County Historical Museum

This museum is dedicated to preserving the history of Vernon and Wilbarger County, Texas. The museum is a brand new endeavor and the vision of Preston Carey Curator. The museum was begun with funds donated by several board members, money from the Vernon Tourism Committee, and the donation of the old jail by the city of Vernon. When completely renovated, it will house a collection that represents 40 years of gathering memorabilia and collectable artifacts from Vernon and Wilbarger County. Some of these include: the turntables from Norswothy’s Music Center sound booth, items from the Rachito Polo Club, a cafe booth from The Flame supper club, Harvey Dean’s Tamale push cart, the original document changing the name of Eagle Flat to Vernon, and many more.

Copper Breaks State Park

Copper Breaks State Park is a state park in Hardeman County, located approximately 12 miles south of Quanah

Activities include camping, picnicking, boating, fishing, mountain biking, swimming, wildlife viewing, backpacking, kite flying, astronomy, natural and historical exhibits. A portion of the official Texas longhorn herd is at the park. The park has campsites for tents, RVs, groups, equestrian use and backpacking.

Copper Breaks State Park has been designated an International Dark Sky Park.
